The Rendition:
"Deep watches his post-death world as a spectator, and the play narrates the events surrounding and following his death whilst occasionally transporting us back into his life. It is through his girlfriend Azure that we gain the most intimate access to who he was. Azure (Selina Jones) is, without question, the star of the show.
Jones brings a rare interiority to the role. What makes Jones' performance so remarkable is that she carries all of this, the grief, the harm, the internalised doubt, and still makes the end of the first half one of the most moving things I have seen on a stage in some time. . "
The Guardian:
"Jones is astounding in the intensity of her performance, in her character’s anguish and interludes of movement."
Upcoming Theatre:
"A moment in which Azure becomes overwhelmed by idealised, airbrushed images on the cover of Vogue culminates in an unforgettable, visceral performance of bodily contortions from Jones. At the end of Act One, her screams reverberate through the candlelit theatre long after the hum of the ensemble has dissipated."
All That Dazzles:
"The strongest element of Deep Azure is the cast, most notably Azure herself. Selina Jones has the most to do in the show, and goes on a journey of extremes with her anguish, confusion, sorrow and heartbreak, testing Jones’ capabilities - a challenge she more than rises to. A painful breakdown towards the end of Act One and a surprising response to a crucial moment in Act Two make her performance continuously exciting and captivating."

"The sinewy body language that Jones deploys as Itan, and the way Kayode’s anguish manifests in physical contortions, are also eloquent.[...] Selina Jones was one of the beneficiaries of the Evening Standard’s Future Theatre Fund in 2021, given during the pandemic to support emerging talents in association with TikTok and in partnership with the National Youth Theatre. Here she fully justifies the judges’ faith in her abilities. "
* * * * | Time Out
"Soon, Kayode (Fode Simbo) is literally wrestling with his demon, Itan (Selina Jones). Jones has a physicality that’s mesmerizing to watch. Her fingers wave like seaweed or transform into claws that interlace with Kayode's own shaking hands, as they speak in a cryptic language of their own. ‘I am history’, she tells him"
* * * * * | The Rendition
"Kayode’s depression is anthropomorphised through the character of Itan, and we see a haunting and extremely visual depiction of his battle. She taunts and tricks him, with an almost serpent like seduction, leading him to believe that they are bound - there is no him without her. They communicate in a language that only the two of them understand, however meaning is not lost. In the absence of language, movement and expression fill the gap."
